About

Having grown up in an Opal family. I remember travelling on rough dirt roads to the township of Coober Pedy on long weekends and for school holidays. I can still taste the smell of the dust and licking stones. From the age of 4 i fearlessly rode my motorbike around our house and over the semi-dugout behind it. I fondly remember being referred to as George the name i share with my 2 cousins and my grandfather who had first taken his family there in the mid 1950’s . My dad and his brothers were well known identities in the Opal business, We often flew there in my uncles 8-seater plane. I had my first contact with Aboriginal Australians here.

I knew from an early age that i wanted to earn a living from Opal and i still do.

The men and the women were hospitable and heroic types whose vibrant character is echoed in the object of their pursuits. This website is dedicated to those heroes.
